Nine words, no notes

Invited back to the microphone at her own rally, Cindy Hyde-Smith delivered one question, nine words long, and left before anyone could answer it.

The scene

Monday night, 26 October, Corinth, Mississippi. The president was in Alcorn County, his fourth visit to the state for Sen. Cindy Hyde-Smith, who faces Democrat Scott Colom on 3 November. (Colom’s week-two warm-up act, readers may recall, was Kamala Harris. Mississippi is having quite a month.)

Toward the end of his speech, Trump called the senator back to the podium. This is the bit every candidate dreams of: the biggest crowd of the campaign, the microphone, and a few seconds to say why you deserve the job.

The tape

Cue

Toward the end of his speech, the president called her back onto the stage, per WAPT.

The speech

“Is this not the best president in our lifetime?”

Exit

She shook the president’s hand, thanked him and walked off stage, per WAPT.

Review

“Thank you, Cindy. I love that. You know, sometimes they get up and they talk for 10 minutes… that was one of the best I’ve ever — Cindy, that was good,”

Nine words. Not one of them was “I”, “Mississippi” or “vote”.

“Is this not”
a question that does not want an answer

“the best president”
the man standing directly behind me

“in our lifetime?”
a range that, conveniently, includes him

Plain English, free of charge

“Please re-elect him. I mean me.”

In fairness

In fairnessThis was not her only speech. Per WAPT, she spoke to the crowd earlier, before the president arrived, thanking people who had queued in the heat and framing the race as “socialism versus capitalism.” Viral clips suggesting she said nothing else all night are wrong. This award is for the encore, which she chose to spend on someone else.

The verdict

A Twat-o-Meter reading of 6 out of 10, filed under “Opening act for the opening act”. It loses points for brevity, which is usually a virtue, and for being, by any measure, the least harmful thing said at that rally. It gains them back for turning her last word to voters before the election into a compliment for a man who was not on the ballot.
